Scottish Unicorn Heraldic Animals 1 Oz - 2023
Scotland adopted the unicorn for its heraldry in the 15th century. During that time, nobles of Europe were selecting various animals as symbols of their identity and values. England selected the lion, for instance, while Spain chose the eagle. James I of Scotland selected the unicorn for reasons that are not entirely clear. Some believe it was chosen because in certain myths, it is said that only a king could capture a unicorn. Other accounts suggest it was because in medieval fiction, the horse of Alexander the Great was often described as a unicorn.
