The fifth issue of the annual World's Wildlife Series is dedicated to the Ocean Rays (Batoidea).
The design of the colored coin struck from 99.99% pure silver depicts a ray jumping out of the water. A rock rising from the ocean can be seen in the background, as well as two seagulls in the sky. The inscriptions "OCEAN RAYS" and "WORLD'S WILDLIFE" outline the design. The reverse features the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Rays are one of the most majestic sea creatures on earth, with more than 500 different kinds. The flat, disc-shaped fish can not only be found in the sea, but also in rivers and lakes. Rays have unique anatomical features, such as the special type of gill slits that allow them to filter oxygen directly from the water. Among the most famous species are the venomous stingray, the manta ray and the electric ray.
