Dunkleosteus
The eleventh issue of the Series Prehistoric Life from the Congo is dedicated to the armored fish Dunkleosteus.
The motive of the premium bullion coin, struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver, features a Dunkleosteus swimming in deep water with its jaws wide open. Above the fish are the inscriptions "PREHISTORIC LIFE", "DUNKLEOSTEUS", "380 - 360 MIO YEARS BC" and the year of issue 2023.
The reverse features the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dunkleosteus is one of the largest representatives of the extinct Placodermi known to date and was native to the shallow seas of the North American, African and European continents about 380 to 360 million years ago. The fish, whose skull and neck area was armored with bones, is thought to have reached a body length of up to six meters, making it one of the apex predators in its habitat.
